What You Will Learn on the Functional Skills Maths Course

The course combines individual online learning with tutor guidance, Skills Checks, mini-tests, assignments and progress reviews. Your learning plan will focus on the areas identified through your initial and diagnostic assessments.

Whole numbers and calculations

Develop confidence in working with positive and negative numbers, calculations, formulas, ratios and proportions. These skills are useful for managing money, understanding information and solving problems at work.

Fractions, decimals and percentages

Learn how to calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages and convert between them. You will apply these skills to practical situations such as discounts, bills, budgets and financial comparisons.

Measures, shape and space

Build your ability to work with length, weight, capacity, time, area, volume, perimeter, angles and two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

Handling data and information

Learn how to interpret tables, charts, graphs and diagrams, calculate averages and use data to make informed decisions.

Mathematical problem-solving

Apply your knowledge to realistic problems drawn from work, education and everyday life. You will practise deciding which calculations to use, checking your answers and explaining your reasoning.

Benefits

By completing the course, you can:

  • Improve your confidence with practical maths
  • Build skills used in employment and everyday life
  • Prepare for a City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths exam
  • Work towards progression into further education, an apprenticeship or employment
  • Gain an Ofqual-regulated qualification after passing the required assessment

City & Guilds explains that its Functional Skills qualifications develop both underpinning knowledge and the ability to apply maths and English in different contexts. City & Guilds Functional Skills

Qualification

After completing your learning and achieving the required standard in your mock assessment, you will be considered for the appropriate City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths exam.

If you pass the exam, you will receive the relevant City & Guilds Functional Skills Mathematics qualification.

Exam readiness is based on your assessment results, progress and completed learning rather than simply reaching the end of a fixed period.

Please note that it may take up to 20 working days for City & Guilds to mark exam and inform us of the results. If you have successfully passed all exams, it will then take up to 2 weeks for us to receive the physical certificate.

Course delivery and duration

This is a blended-learning programme combining independent online learning with tutor guidance and any required centre-based support.

The duration depends on:

  • Your starting level
  • The results of your diagnostic assessment
  • The areas you need to develop
  • Your engagement and rate of progress
  • Your vocational programme timetable

Your adviser and tutor will agree an individual learning plan with you. Funded start dates are connected to London Talent Pathways vocational cohorts and are not available as daily standalone enrolments.
