If you need Maths for university, an apprenticeship, further education or employment, Functional Skills Maths Level 2 may provide an accepted GCSE Maths alternative.
It is often described as a GCSE Maths equivalent because it is a Level 2 qualification. It is not the same qualification as GCSE Maths, so you must check acceptance first.
The City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam is a computer-based assessment lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes.
It contains:
a 25-minute non-calculator section; and
a 1 hour and 20-minute calculator section.
The assessment examines practical mathematical skills, including the ability to understand information, select appropriate methods, complete calculations and solve problems.

Functional Skills English Level 2: a GCSE English alternative
Functional Skills English Level 2 may provide an accepted GCSE English alternative for university, apprenticeships, further education and employment.
It is commonly described as a GCSE English equivalent because it is a Level 2 qualification. However, it does not automatically replace a specifically stated GCSE English Language requirement.
To achieve the full City & Guilds Functional Skills English Level 2 qualification, you must pass three components:
Reading – 1 hour;
Writing – 1 hour and 20 minutes; and
Speaking, Listening and Communicating – approximately 30 minutes.
Because English consists of three components, candidates with an urgent deadline should plan carefully. The complete qualification cannot be awarded until all three components have been completed and passed.

How quickly will you receive your Functional Skills result?
People looking for Functional Skills exam fast results should understand both the normal timescale and the maximum published timescale.
Intech Centre generally receives City & Guilds Functional Skills results within one week. However, marking can take up to 20 working days.
A result within one week is therefore typical, but it is not guaranteed.
Your certificate may be issued after your result. If you have an urgent university, apprenticeship or employment deadline, ask the receiving organisation whether it will accept official result confirmation while the certificate is being processed.
You should also allow additional time for English because all three English components must be completed and passed.
